The day had some rain forecast but by the time we woke the forecast had changed to cool and cloudy.

A photo can’t do justice to the panoramic views of the breakfast dining room in Worthbauer. It was one of those places you definitely want to eat breakfast at rather than our usual practice finding a cafe along the way.

For the first time, since it is was cooler today, I could wear my merino wool jersey! We put additional layers under the kids cycling jerseys.

We headed down a short but very sleep slope.

Then along the main road back to the town centre of Grein where we would catch a ferry.

The ferries cross the river back and forth all day so it’s always a very short wait.

The smooth cycle path followed the Danube.

Some other groups left the ferry and were cycling around us as well.

We headed into some countryside areas with crops and lovely farmhouses.

The golden colours were a sight to behold as we rolled by.

At a much needed rest stop, I sliced up some apples and gave the crew some pate on bread.

Livened up, we made it into Melk in good time.

Where we as this model of the Tower of Babel!

Melk boasts a UNESCO heritage site that is an extremely grand and well restored Benedictine Abbey.

The architecture and displays were stunning.

I had thought it was an active monastery but the loads of tourists and the layout of the building said otherwise.

Much more than a museum, it was like visiting a mini-Vatican.

There was a manuscript of Bernard of Clairvaux!

We descended a spiral staircase that had a circular mirror at the bottom that made it look like it went much deeper than it did!

The views from the top of the Abbey were stunning. We could see where we had cycled to get here.

We left the abbey in search of dinner.

And were not disappointed with some great fish amidst our al fresco dining!
